Opening statements began today in the trial of a mother and a grandmother accused of starving a 4-year-old girl to death in Brooklyn.
Carlotta Brett-Pierce and her mother, Loretta Brett, are charged in the death of Marchella Pierce. Brett-Pierce faces murder charges, while her mother is charged with manslaughter.
According to prosecutors, Marchella weighed just 18 pounds when she was found dead in Bed-Stuy back in 2010. Prosecutors say the girl was beaten, bound, drugged, dehydrated and starved.
