October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and one local survivor is using her clippers to help patients fighting the disease.

Liz Hernandez, of VIP Barbershop in Bridgeport, is offering free haircuts to anyone who donates to Swim Across the Sound this month.

"I was diagnosed at age 37," Hernandez says. "I literally had to move out of my home and live with my mother. I got really sick."

During her breast cancer battle, the cosmetologist struggled to make ends meet.

Hernandez says the Swim Across the Sound patient assistance program at St. Vincent's Medical Center was her financial lifeline during a tough time.

"They can help with rent or if you have a car payment," Hernandez says. "I took advantage of the groceries."

The Bridgeport barber won't be taking a paycheck this month.

Instead, clients can make a donation to Swim Across the Sound on Hernandez's behalf.

"Last year we raised $10,000 to help those struggling with a cancer diagnosis," Hernandez says. "I know what it feels like to fight it, I know the struggles financially, and I know how family feels when they’re concerned about you and you’re just trying to fight for your life."
