The Turn To Tara team compiled a "cheat sheet" for scoring last-minute fall travel deals, including what you should know about booking your next flight.
Destinations like Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean always see a bump in demand as the weather starts getting cooler, but Sean Cudahy, from The Points Guy, says flexible flyers can still score bargains.
His advice is to consider flying Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Saturdays when prices tend to dip.
Cudahy also suggests that travelers should be open to different destinations.
Those looking for a deal for Thanksgiving or New Year's should also book early when the flights are better.
And what about those old tricks, like booking flights on Tuesdays at midnight? "I think the fares tend to be pretty consistent. They're just algorithms constantly at work that fluctuate those fares," says Cudahy.
He also recommends setting Google price alerts and watching for sudden dips.
"I was watching a fare that was over $700, getting an alert every single day, and then all of a sudden, one day it dropped to $415, and I booked it on the spot," he says.
If your flight gets delayed or canceled, you should also know your rights.
"Trip Delay Protection" is a little-known perk built into many premium travel credit cards, says Cudahy.
If a flight is delayed by six hours or more or requires an overnight stay, several cards will reimburse expenses. These include meals, hotels, transportation and toiletries. This applies to the cardholder and travel companions.
To qualify, the trip must be booked with an eligible credit card. All receipts must be kept. Claims typically need to be filed within 30 to 60 days. Even trips booked with points or miles may qualify if the card is used to pay taxes and fees.
