Two children and one teenager died Wednesday night when a fire ripped through an apartment in a Coney Island high-rise building.
Witnesses say they saw 16-year-old Ricardo Clarke shouting out his window for help after the fire started. Clarke and his nieces, 9-year-old Jahgiria Sheffer and 3-year-old Jahnae O'Pharrow, were later pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. Fire officials say the blaze started in their sixth-floor apartment of the 20-story building.
It took 138 firefighters to get the three-alarm blaze under control. At least seven firefighters suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, fire officials do not consider it suspicious.
