A recent surge in ATM thefts across New York City has left bodega owners reeling. The United Bodegas of America (UBA) is taking action, offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of suspects behind what they’re calling a "citywide crime spree."
The group of thieves, dubbed "The Midnight Smashers," is suspected of targeting at least 49 locations, with 10 of those incidents reported in Brooklyn. One of the affected bodegas is located in Midwood, where owners are now grappling with significant losses.
Surveillance footage from a recent burglary in Queens shows just how bold the suspects are. According to the NYPD, the group—believed to consist of three individuals—has been carrying out smash-and-grab style heists since September.
“These criminals are not just stealing money; they’re threatening the livelihood of small business owners across the city,” the UBA stated in a press release.
The UBA has announced plans to hold a news conference later today to address the wave of thefts and call for increased security measures to protect small businesses.
If you have any information about these ATM burglaries, you’re urged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-800-577-TIPS.
