The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) president was in Brooklyn today to address the release of last week's controversial teacher evaluations. UFT President Michael Mulgrew spoke at P.S. 321, the William Penn Elementary School, to field several questions about the ratings, calculated using an algorithm to predict educators' performance quality. He says the report fails to account for factors such as class size and special education. Teachers say they were told the experimental results would remain private. However, parents at the school say they are fully supportive of the teachers and that they blame Mayor Bloomberg for failing to keep the results private. Department of Education officials and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott have also noted a large margin of error in the study.
