The Ukrainian Institute of America, located on East 79th Street and Fifth Avenue, will be hosting an open house to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Now that we are a year into it, most people realize this isn't just about Ukraine and about defending Ukraine's borders … it’s a balance of power issue,” says Kathy Nalywajko, president of the Ukrainian Institute of America. “It’s really the free world against the autocratic world, and Ukraine is holding the line on behalf of all the freedom-loving citizens of the world.”
The open house will take place on Friday, Feb. 24, and will be open from noon to 6 p.m.
Inside you’ll find themed rooms featuring video exhibits, art installations, speakers and even a healing space.
“We have an installation that is a tribute to many fallen artists from Ukraine -- either ballet dancers or musicians or bone dancers that literally had no experience in the military but took up arms to protect their country and defend freedom,” said Nalywajko.
Certain artworks on display are for sale and benefit organizations helping Ukrainian soldiers on the ground.
The showcase also highlights another key feature: resiliency.
“That is kind of the Ukrainian profile, so to speak, and the spirit of Ukranians is that we don't give up and we just keep fighting,” added Nalywajko.
Friday’s event is free and open to the public. While registration is encouraged, it's not required.
