Residents along Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights say piles of trash have grown larger each day since last month’s storm, and they want the city to clean them up.
Between Rochester and Utica avenues, News 12 cameras saw multiple piles of trash stacked high, including one continuous line of garbage bags that stretched about four car lengths and stood roughly five feet tall.
Neighbors say the pile has grown longer and more unsightly as days pass without any pickup.
Residents say the Department of Sanitation could choose almost any point along the roadway and find a similar scene that needs attention.
“It’s been two weeks of this, and every day they are getting worse,” said Crown Heights resident Al Lilburd. “They are getting taller, and still I don’t see anyone come clean it up. One to ten, it’s ten annoying.”
Some neighbors say winter temperatures help keep the smell down, but they still question how tall or wide the piles must get before the city responds.
In a statement to News 12, DSNY says they are sending a team to respond, adding that DSNY crews are currently spread among all shifts to facilitate ongoing snow removal.
They say that citywide DSNY crews "are up to date with trash and compost pickup – though pickup might be on a different shift than usual. So, if you see bags and cans out for pickup, we might get them in the evening instead of the morning.
They added that recycling collection remains on a less than 24-hour delay.
