For the first time, an undocumented immigrant will be able to practice law in New York.

Cesar Vargas was sworn in Wednesday as the first undocumented immigrant admitted into the New York Bar Association.

Vargas has been an undocumented immigrant since his family came from Mexico when he was 5 years old. He was blocked from practicing law because of a federal law prohibiting professional licenses to undocumented immigrants.

His road to the Bar Association was paved in June when the New York Supreme Court ruled that the state judiciary had the authority to determine an applicant's eligibility.

They decided Vargas had all the merits to be a lawyer, including eligibility to work in the United States under President Barack Obama's deferred action for childhood arrival, or "DACA."
