Union: Corrections officer beaten by inmate at Newark prison

A Newark corrections officer was beaten by an inmate Thursday evening.

A Newark corrections officer was beaten by an inmate Thursday evening. 
The union that represents New Jersey corrections officers says the attack happened at Northern State Prison in Newark.
They call the attack “unexpected” and say the inmate stole the guard's pepper spray and used it on responding officers.
The inmate was eventually restrained.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with cuts and bruises to his face.
