Hundreds of union members showed up Monday to protest outside Waste Management?s Brooklyn headquarters over what they say are unfair contract demands.
Union members say they are furious that Waste Management, one of the countries largest trash removal companies, is trying to cut overtime and stop paying health insurance and pension benefits. Some protesters say that will make it nearly impossible to make ends meet. A spokesman for Waste Management says the company is committed to reaching a fair agreement and preserving employee wages. Workers say that?s not enough and they are prepared to protest every day if necessary. Teamsters and union members from as far away as Massachusetts came to show their support. They say this is not just an issue in New York, but also an issue across the country.
