A once-bankrupt company is now paving the future for biodiesel in New York City.
Metro Oil became United Metro Energy Corporation in March 2013, and the new owners say their plan is to open an innovative biodiesel plant in the spring of 2015.
The new Greenpoint facility is expected to make 50 million gallons of the renewable fuel every year by turning used vegetable oil or corn into biodiesel.
Company president Dan Gianfalla says trucks will deliver this fuel to heat homes and other facilities across the city.
He says the plant will help to reduce the carbon footprint and make air cleaner in New York City.
Gianfalla says the plan saved 130 workers from being laid off and that they even added a dozen new employees.
