Universal pre-kindergarten is now in effect under Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Bronx parents say their children's first day went well under the new program. Many that spoke with News 12 The Bronx took the day off to bring their little ones to the first day of school.
The Riverdale Neighborhood House, a pre-K school with 72 kids, only kept their students for an hour Thursday.
They will gradually stay longer until a full day of pre-K next Tuesday.
