Residents of the Van Dyke Houses in Brownsville came together Wednesday to determine safety priorities in their community.

They have been granted $30,000 from the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design projects. They went over creating safety without law enforcement and court and how to enable and empower people in the community.

"It allows the community to get feedback. About ... their concerns and it kind of like raises the level of trust ... with agency and community," said resident Alaire Chappell.

Back in August, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced nearly $9 million in funding in support of the Brownsville community. This was after the deadly mass shooting at the annual Old Timer's Day event.

From that funding, residents have made lighting repairs, and even unveiled the Brownsville mobile trauma unit at Wednesday's event.
