Residents are voicing concerns over a pothole and a broken fire hydrant on a busy street in Van Nest.

Residents living on Commonwealth Avenue near East Tremont Avenue said drivers speed down the street, hit a deep pothole, then stop in the middle of the block to check for any damage to their cars.

They told News 12 that it is even worse during alternate side of the street parking because drivers can’t avoid hitting the pothole.

It started when the city worked on the roadway back in July.

One homeowner said the pothole is only part of the problem.

He told News 12 that the fire hydrant next to it is broken, and the inground pipe is leaking water through the foundation and onto his property.

He’s using sandbags to slow the leak and claimed he’s called 311 dozens of times to get it fixed.

“We can’t win,” said Darren, the homeowner who only gave his first name. “It’s like, what can we do for [the city] to do a good job? Because if you see this job, you’d think that nobody’s ever touched it.”

It was touched about a month ago when News 12 first reported on the story. The Department of Environmental Protection showed up three hours after News 12 called them, and a city crew filled the pothole.

However, residents said that filling only lasted about two weeks, and now they are back to square one.

News 12 reached out to DEP again for comment and has not yet received a response.
