A disabled veteran from The Bronx has been forced to leave his home because he says his landlord unexpectedly shut down the elevator in his building.

Charles Rodriguez says he returned to his residence at 1411 Grand Concourse after spending the holidays with family to discover a notice stating that the only elevator in the building will be shut down for repairs.

Rodriguez has been in a wheelchair for over 40 years after sustaining injuries in the Korean War. Since he lives on the fourth floor, he's been unable to reach his apartment without an elevator, forcing him to seek shelter at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Hospital.

CDC Management, the building's landlord, said in a statement that while the situation is "regrettable," it was necessary to shut down the elevator in order to modernize it.

After Rodriquez threatened CDC Management with legal action, the company agreed to grant the veteran rent abetment while the elevator is out of service. The abetment will be prorated from Jan.1 until March, when service is expected to be restored.
