Volunteer fire department in BX in hot water
After two volunteer firefighters from the Aviation Volunteer Fire Department were detained for responding to a call, many are questioning the legitimacy of the organization.
Officials say the department in Classon Point lacks proper training and authorization to be a fire department, has no non-profit status and has not been approved by the mayor.
The department acknowledges its tainted past but stands by its new management.
Officials say two FDNY stations are enough to serve the community, but members of the volunteer fire department say they can respond to some calls quicker and fill a void left by the FDNY.
Members of the volunteer fire department say they will continue to respond to calls, unless stopped by edict of the mayor or state.
