Volunteers are sprucing up the community center at NYCHA's Farragut Houses in Brooklyn Heights.
Kimberly George, of the group Rebuilding Together New York City, says the volunteers make repairs for low-income New Yorkers and make modifications to suit disabled people.
"And we renovate community centers and community spaces, because we know that in a city this large, space matters," she says.
The first step for Farragut was redoing the gym, which took 30 volunteers less than a week. Other improvements are still underway.
"Any given week, we are doing a lot of volunteer activities," says Lynn McMahon, a volunteer from Accenture. "But once a year, we have designed this day of service, and we have a large group across the city helping the community."
