Volunteers installed solar lights on homes in Brownsville Saturday afternoon.

Organizers told News 12 that 25 members from the National Black Law Student Association installed dozens of lights as part of the "Light It Up" program from Rebuilding Together NYC.

Representatives say that lighting plays a major role in how secure residents feel in their neighborhoods.

"We are able to go out into the neighborhoods and install the solar powered lights…to help people feel little safer, a little more secure in the neighborhoods," said Terry Scott, a representative from Rebuilding Together NYC.

Vanessa Cruz was one of the residents who received a solar light installation.

"We need more light in this area. Plus, it’s a security issue,” she said.

The program was started as an effort to revitalize Coney Island after Superstorm Sandy.

Rebuilding Together NYC expanded the program to improve street lighting throughout the city.

Representatives say that their goal is to install a minimum of 100 lights by the end of 2018.
