Many homes and bridges on the north side of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were destroyed more than a week ago when the small island's trough system fell through.
Brooklyn residents came together Sunday to help the more than 170 people now living in shelters.
Volunteers worked to fill and ship dozens of barrels full of collected clothes, food and small appliances to send back to the island.
Some organizers have family living on the island and say hearing how badly everyone is being impacted is devastating.
Organizers say while the barrels shipped tonight won't make it to the island in time for Christmas, they made arrangements to ensure packages are delivered to families in need by the holiday.
