Dozens of people in Bed-Stuy braved the cold Saturday to participate in a volunteer project in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The nonprofit group 500 Men Making a Difference is working for 72 hours straight to refurbish the historical Magnolia Tree Earth Center. They are painting, repairing and cleaning several rooms in the building.
The center currently houses office space for some local nonprofit groups. The building was saved by community members back in the 1970s for the purpose of preserving an old magnolia tree in the front, which was planted there in the 1880s.
The volunteers say working on this project not only helps the community, but represents preserving Martin Luther King's memory.
Dozens of helpers will be coming and going, working in shifts throughout the weekend. They plan to finish the project by Monday night.
