The clock is ticking until Democratic primaries in June, and one of the races is for New York City Council District 38 representing parts of Red Hook, Sunset Park, Dyker Heights, Borough Park, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach.
Ling Ye, who is challenging Councilwoman Alexa Avilés, says she came to America at 14 years old.
She says she now wants to be the change she wanted as a child.
"Years later, I realized 'Oh wow, we could've gotten help.' How many kids are there that were in my shoes? I'm sure many. But I don't ant any more kids to go through what I went through," said Ye.
She says one of the issues she's most passionate about is affordable housing.
"Houses that are intended for two families but instead are having six, seven, eight families living in it. And we have tragedy after tragedy when people live on top of each other and they're stressed," said Ye.
Ye also says if elected, she would try and negotiate the city's budget to improve public safety.
"We should ask NYPD to do community-oriented policing," said Ye.
The Democratic primaries will be on June 24.
