NEW: RECORD COLD - Islip MacArthur Airport observed a high temperature of only 17 degrees today. This beats the previous coldest high temperature for today's date which was 19 degrees set back in 1977.
NOW: It is dry, but breezy and frigid this evening with wind chills below zero overnight. Please layer up and avoid time outdoors.
DANGEROUS COLD CONTINUES
ALERTS: A cold weather advisory continues for all of Long Island until 10 a.m. Saturday for wind chills -5 to -15 degrees.
Long Island is 7 days into this stretch of temperatures well below 32 degrees and wind chills far colder. This extremely cold air can lead to frostbite concerns in a matter of minutes. Please limit outdoor time through the weekend even though it might be tempting to try to have fun outside. Also, keep in mind that this is more ice than snow at this point on the ground and that sledding can be dangerous due to the ice increasing your speed on sleds. Use caution!
While Tuesday may get just above freezing next week and temperatures overall will be better than this week next week, most highs over the next 10 days are expected to stay at or below freezing. This can continue through at least mid-February.
AN UPDATE ON SUNDAY'S OFFSHORE STORM
The nearby coastal storm we have been tracking all week still looks like it will not bring accumulating snow to most of Long Island. From Riverhead on east through Montauk and Orient points, there is still the chance for a trace to one inch of snow. Any slight jog west with the storm would change those East End amounts a bit, but we do not expect that to happen at this time.
You should expect a mostly cloudy and windy day on Sunday with the chance for flurries, other than areas further east which can have that light accumulation. Wind gusts all across Long Island will be in the 25 to 45 mph range.
Minor coastal flooding during high tide is also still possible. This is enhanced by already elevated tides due to Sunday's full moon.

TONIGHT
Partly cloudy, breezy and bitterly cold. Lows in the single digits will feel like below zero through Saturday morning.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Saturday will be the nicer half of the weekend, but it will only feel like the single digits at best in the afternoon under increasing clouds. Sunday, as mentioned above, will be windy with a large storm mostly missing Long Island to our east.
NEXT WEEK
Temperatures are better than this week overall, but it is still cold with most high temperatures expected to be at or below freezing. Much of the week looks dry other than the chance for at least snow showers by next weekend.
Have a great weekend and stay warm!
