Waterfront communities are on alert today today as Tropical Storm Elsa makes its way to New York City. It's expected to bring heavy rain and beach erosion as it makes landfall.
Communities like the ones on Gerritsen Beach are all within walking distance to the water. That could create serious problems once the storm hits the area Thursday night.
To better prepare, the CDC recommends keeping emergency phone numbers handy and make an emergency supply kit with items like a flashlight in case the power goes out.
Don't forget about your furry friends either. CDC officials recommend finding a pet friendly hotel or friend that can help in case of evacuation.
The New York City Office of Emergency Management suggests checking on elderly and people with disabilities before the storm arrives.
Now is the time to stock up on groceries - gas and any emergency items that you might need. It's also important to look for loose items like garbage cans and lawn furniture while also anchoring propane tanks and gas grills.
For residents in high rise buildings, make sure to close windows and keep a safe distance in case a window breaks.
The effects of the storm will start Thursday night and go into Friday morning.
