Residents on Essex Street say they’re living in fear and frustration after a man they believe to be a squatter took over a vacant home on their block.
The property at 393 Essex St. looks like an ordinary home from the outside, but neighbors say the inside tells a different story, including doors hanging off their hinges, locks broken and a chained basement door.
They say the man, who was caught on video using bolt cutters to enter, has been living there for at least eight months, and he's not alone.
Neighbors say they've seen a woman carrying a baby to the basement and a steady stream of people coming and going at all hours.
One resident alleges the man has been trying to scam seniors into renting rooms from him.
Residents say no action has been taken, despite multiple 911 calls and efforts to contact the property owner.
The Department of Housing Preservation and Development told News 12 the property is outside its jurisdiction, leaving locals with little recourse.
Neighbors say they just want their peace - and their block - back.
