After being closed for months due to the pandemic, a Bedford-Stuyvesant juice bar is back open and finding ways to adapt to the new normal.
Tea, herbs, sea moss, the popular ginger shot, and all things health and wellness are just some of the things you can find at the Bush Doctor Juice Bar.
Owner Tiecha Merritt says she opened the shop 12 years ago to give the neighborhood healthy food and drink options, which she says the area lacked.
"It's a vibe of healthiness, customer service, getting to know your neighbors, they're getting to know you, seeing what you can offer that might help better their health," Meritt says.
Merritt says closing for two months due to the pandemic impacted business, so she found ways to adapt, adding new items like handmade jewelry and sea water to help bring in more money.
"A lot of business owners adapt, and we have to, to stay alive," she says. "We have to adapt because Tompkins Avenue was really flourishing and then the pandemic hit, and then everything just slowed down tremendously."
Now that the juice bar is back open, safety measures are in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
"Masks are required, we don't allow anyone to eat inside, no more than two to three people at a time. It has to be social distanced, and once they order, they leave and they wait outside," Merritt says.
As the owner continues to adapt to the many changes brought about by the pandemic, she says she hopes for things to one day return to pre-pandemic normalcy.
