Saturday morning’s fatal car crash in West Babylon has neighbors calling on Suffolk County and Town of Babylon officials to do something to make a notoriously dangerous intersection safer.
As News 12 reported, two people died and four others were seriously hurt as a result of the crash on Great East Neck Road and Railroad Avenue early Saturday morning. For some neighbors, grief has turned into anger over a problem they say should’ve been solved decades ago.
A spokesperson for Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine's office tells News 12 that “a study has been initiated by the county and we will review the findings when it is completed.”
Jill Kology has lived along Great East Neck Road in West Babylon for decades. She says this problem could’ve been solved years ago.
"Why are you not here today? There are people fighting for their lives right now because of the county's inability to create a safe roadway here,” she said.
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaeffer tells News 12 the town has been asking for a traffic study since July that was focusing on a stretch of road further down the road. After the recent crashes, Babylon Town officials have asked that the study be expedited and cover where the recent crash was.
"The Town of Babylon is committed to providing any and all assistance to Suffolk County as they study this stretch of Great E. Neck Road,” said Supervisor Schaeffer. “Motorists safety and residential safety are most important to us and continue to be a top priority."
A wake was held Wednesday evening for one of the victims of the crash.
