321ds agoThe Westchester County district attorney hosted a forum on gun safety on Monday to discuss what can be done to combat gun violence.
As violence continued over the weekend with several shootings in Yonkers, it set the stage for the forum hosted by Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah on combatting gun violence.
"The U.S. Supreme Court invalidated New York's century-old concealed carry law," said Rocah.
The decision left New York lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul scrambling to tweak the state’s gun laws soon after. Lawmakers raised the age for purchasing semi-automatic weapons to 21 years old and banned body armor for civilians.
"New York has been a national leader in strong gun safety legislation," said Rocah.
One tool available to protect people from gun violence includes Extreme Risk Protection Orders, better known as “Red Flag” laws.
Ghost guns were also a focus of the forum.
"Ghost guns are considered by the ATF to be the fastest growing gun safety problem facing our country," said Tarek Rahman, Westchester County District Attorney's Office.
