When it comes to different kinds of pet parasites that can harm your fur baby, a lot of it has to do with where you live.
According to the non-profit Companion Animal Parasite Council, pets living in the northeast part of the U.S. are more vulnerable to Lyme disease rather than pets who live down south who are at a higher risk of heart worms.
Although vets always recommend using tick and flea and heartworm medications for your pets monthly, Companion Animal Parasite Council says geographical, rehoming, and wildlife populations contribute to risk factors.
Pathogens that cause heartworm disease, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis continue to spread throughout the United States in 2022.
The Companion Animal Parasite Council released a map which highlights areas of the U.S. they say show risk factors for pet parasites and exposures.
They say the best preventive measures that veterinarians and their clients can take is to prevent contact between companion animals and these vectors.
