As Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announces his transition team, parents and teachers across the city are watching closely to see how his education policies will take shape.

At a press conference Wednesday, Mamdani said education remains one of his top priorities.

“The topics of education and public safety continue to be of immense importance,” Mamdani said. “We continue to prepare for delivery on those very issues alongside the others that concern New Yorkers. And that will be the work of the next 57 days.”

During his campaign, Mamdani promised to fully implement the state’s class size reduction law, improve the city’s public-school curriculum and move away from mayoral control of schools, shifting more decision-making power to local communities.

The United Federation of Teachers endorsed Mamdani during his campaign.

In a statement to News 12, UFT President Michael Mulgrew said the union stands ready to help the incoming mayor make the city more affordable for educators and families.

Some parents have expressed concerns about how Mamdani’s proposed changes could affect schools, while others are optimistic that his administration will bring more equity.

Mamdani has not yet announced his pick for schools chancellor.
