New Year's Eve will be the last time that Clinton Hill residents can hear the collection of factory, railroad and ship whistles collected by engineer Conrad Milster.
Milster says he wanted to try them out on Pratt Institute's Brooklyn campus 50 years ago, and knew New Year's would be the time he would be allowed to make a lot of noise. He began the tradition with a small group, and it has grown since then.
The campus is stopping the annual ceremony because of inadequate staffing during the winter break.
Milster will hold on to the whistles for his personal collection.
The whistle blowing begins on New Year's Eve at 9 p.m.
