Williamsburg shooting victim identified as 21-year-old Joharis Rivas

Police have identified the victim of a deadly shooting outside a Williamsburg auto repair shop as 21-year-old Joharis Rivas.
The shooting happened around 2:18 p.m. Tuesday in front of 10 Meserole St.
Investigators say Rivas was shot once in the head.
He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.
A witness told police the suspect fled the scene on a scooter. Officers say they are looking for a man dressed in all black, wearing a mask and carrying a backpack.
Friends of the victim say Rivas was a caring and fun person. He leaves behind three young daughters.
Council member Jennifer Gutiérrez, whose office is just steps from the crime scene, said in a statement that she is “shaken” by the shooting.
She also noted that Williamsburg has worked for decades to reduce gun violence and that local violence-prevention groups are now stepping in to support the community.
This marks the second shooting in the 90th Precinct this year. According to NYPD data, there were no reported shootings in the precinct in 2024.
