The NYPD arrested a 30-year-old man Monday accused of vandalizing the windows and two statues outside St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church in Bensonhurst.
Both damaged statues were covered up on Tuesday. Deacon Anthony Mammoliti said the church wanted to end messages of hate.
"We want to diffuse that and focus on what really matters, and that's the good," he said.
Deacon Anthony told News 12 that focusing on the positives is easier thanks to Joanne Liggiri - a community member who has lived across the street for the last two decades and caught some of the acts of vandalism on video.
"This man just randomly started breaking all the windows and he was moving towards the statue," said Liggiri. "I gave the description of what he was wearing... they were able to get him within seconds."
The NYPD refused to identify the suspect in custody. He has not yet been charged.
