A man is behind bars after allegedly breaking into Valencia Bakery in the Bronx and beating the owner, who is now recovering in the hospital.
The owner’s wife and those close to them say they spent hours cleaning up the inside of the bakery on East 138th St.
Police tell News 12 the bakery was broken into just after 3 p.m.
Those close to the owner say the owner was beaten with several household items, including a broom and a vacuum cleaner.
Police sources tell News 12 this was not the suspect’s first time at the bakery. They say he broke in last Tuesday and stole car keys belonging to an employee and stole a vehicle.
When the suspect returned Friday afternoon, the owner recognized him.
Police tell News 12 the owner then shut the gate, locking them both inside the store.
Police sources say the suspect then ransacked the store, grabbing anything he could to beat the owner, which included a cane, a broom and a vacuum cleaner - and struck the owner of the store in the head multiple times.
As this unfolded, family members tell News 12 the suspect used the store's phone to call his own mother, as for why it is unclear at this time.
Sources tell News 12 officers later arrived but could not get inside right away because the bakery was locked up.
Eventually, they were able to get the owner safely to the hospital.
Police tell News 12 the suspect is in custody. The identity and charges the suspect is facing have not been confirmed yet.
Family members tell News 12 the suspect's mother eventually called back asking why her son had made a call from inside the bakery. They say they told her what happened and then said, “see you in court.”
