A seven-year-long battle over construction between neighbors has left one woman out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Eljin Elias says she has been plagued by construction woes from her neighbor’s gut renovation. She says the home she saved for and bought 22 years ago is beginning to crumble.
The Department of Buildings tells News 12 they’ve issued multiple violations to the next-door owner, with fines totaling more than $144,000.
They say they have also posted seven stop-work orders, with one still in effect now.
The DOB released a statement saying, “We have taken strong enforcement actions against the contractors and halted all construction work at 438 Herkimer St., Brooklyn, for their continued failure to protect the neighboring property."
News 12 tried contacting the property owner but has not heard back yet.
“My house is my castle. I worked hard to get this,” said Elias.
She says that since construction started, doors in her house don’t close.
Elias says there are more than a dozen cracks in the house. She says she has also made a dozen calls to the city.
“It's the Department of Building’s responsibility to say after all these violations on that building, 'Hey, what was done?”' said Elias.
She says she has spent $200,000 on the fight and has also filed an insurance claim, but that her lawyer took most of the payout.
She says an estimate to fix the damage is another $300,000. “It’s cost me twice what I’ve paid for the house,” said Elias.
