Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said the city has a bright future, not just in New York, but the whole country during his State of the City address Wednesday night.

Coming out of the pandemic, Spano said Yonkers has proven it's resilient, especially its schools. Spano said more than 90% of the class of 2021 graduated.

"Making Yonkers the first and only Big 5 City District in New York to accomplish such an achievement," Spano touted, as well as plans for modernizing the district's 100 plus-year-old infrastructure.

Spano said the city is one of the safest in the country with crime down 44% since he took office a decade ago. He said the police force continues to work toward diversity and will add 10 more officers to the roster.

He also said the city is doubling down on its efforts to protect the environment with the new Westchester Power program.

"We are eliminating the fear of awaiting your monthly Con Ed bill," Spano said.

He said affordable housing and jobs are growing as well, with upwards of 2,000 just from Lionsgate Studios facility that opened in February.

"We want to make sure that when the tide goes up, the boats go up along with it," Spano said.

Spano also addressed the approximately 10,000 Ukrainian Americans in Westchester. He said the city is standing up to help to share its unstoppable energy with those who need it most.

Spano said that he asked Albany to end Yonkers' long push for full gaming at Empire City. He said casino owner MGM has promised a $1 billion impact in the area if it happens.
