Yonkers police are cracking down on illegal two- and three-wheel vehicles they say are a nuisance and safety hazard.

News 12 visited one of the department's tow yards where more than 50 dirt bikes, motorcycles, mopeds and scooters are piling up.

They are unregistered and uninsured, which makes them illegal.

The towing is part of a Yonkers police initiative called "Operation Half the Wheels, All the Laws." It also aims at educating the public on how to legally own and ride these vehicles.

"They are not registered, there is no accountability, so when these vehicles are on the road, they could potentially hit your vehicle, they could potentially hurt somebody. The idea is when you are just driving around lawlessly, it's a problem," says Yonkers Police Commissioner Chris Sapienza.

It's not the first time Yonkers has cracked down on these vehicles.

In May, police towed more than 70 illegal motorbikes and ATVs during another operation.

Over the past 12 months, Yonkers police have seen a fatal moped accident where one person died and others were injured. In another incident involving a moped, police said the operator and nearly died, suffering significant injuries.

Police also said they have several felony investigations involving people using illegal scooters to commit serious crimes and flee the scene.
