The price of butter and other ingredients have risen significantly due to inflation, and local bakeries are feeling the impact.
Eric Jeraci, of Delite Bake Shop in Yonkers, says it has gotten a lot pricier for the bakery to make cakes this year compared to last.
“Looking at butter specifically, I was looking back at my bills, and it was only $65 in January, a year and a half ago. But the most recent bill was $134 a case,” he says.
Jeraci says that in September 2021, the bakery spent $3,564 at one of their suppliers who supplies eggs, sugar, yeast and flour. As of September this year, the total was $7,206.59.
The price doubled for the same exact quantity of supplies.
"It’s gone up so much, and it's actually really hard to have a small business these days, you have to watch your pennies with everything,” Jeraci says.
The bakery had no choice but to raise their prices in March for the first time in five years. Luckily, that has not seemed to deter their loyal customers.
