Following an attack and robbery of an elderly Brooklyn woman in an elevator last month, a group of youngsters now are stepping in to help the victim recover.
Lillian France, an 85-year-old woman, was attacked and robbed in August, and while police arrested a suspect, France still struggles to recover from the incident.
"Up to now, she can't even be by herself," says Joy Hamilton, France's niece. "If the doorbell rings, it startles her. If the phone rings, it startles her. Somebody has to be with her all the time."
With help from Sen. Eric Adams, of Brooklyn, the Youth Task Force is trying to make things better for France. They raised $900, a bit more than the suspect stole from France as she made her way back to her family's apartment in Crown Heights that day.
"I'm standing here this afternoon, still not feeling well," France says. "But I feel it is my duty to come and to thank the young people of the community."
While she says she still struggles with what happened to her, she adds this gesture gives her hope for the future.
"I wish that they will continue to do good work," she says.
