All eyes are on Zohran Mamdani, the city's Democratic nominee for mayor.
The Democratic Socialist hit the campaign trail Monday, standing shoulder to shoulder with Teamsters union members on the picket line, demanding better wages for those who work at the Perrigo Company.
Mamdani secured a major endorsement over the weekend from Gov. Kathy Hochul. The endorsement is being seen as a move to unify the Democratic Party, though the governor admits the two don't align on every issue.
"I am proud that when New Yorkers ask themselves what their leaders are doing, they will know that the governor and the mayor are working hand in hand to fight for the people that call this great city home," said Mamdani.
The mayoral candidate is also under fire from President Donald Trump, who labeled him a communist in a Truth Social Post.
His progressive platform has made him a target while rivals in the mayoral race, like independent candidates Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, hope to position themselves as alternatives heading into November.
Mamdani says his top priority is protecting everyday New Yorkers.
"I am looking to work with anyone, no matter their politics, no matter our disagreements, as long as it's to the benefit of New Yorkers, and that includes the president," he said.
It's unclear if other top Democrats, like Sen. Chuck Schumer or Rep. Hakeem Jeffries plan to follow suit and endorse Mamdani. A spokesperson for Schumer told News 12 in a statement "The Senator and the Assemblyman recently met in NYC. They had a good meeting. They know each other well, and they’re going to keep talking."
