A building dating back to the 19th century will be saved for future generations to admire after it was designated as a landmark.

The former Williamsburgh Savings Bank building was once a courthouse, bank and is now the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The Landmark Preservation Commission says the neoclassical design of the building shows the industrial prosperity of the area during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Reportedly, the church did not want the landmark label because it would cost more money to maintain that the small congregation says they couldn't afford, but the Landmark Preservation Commission vowed to help in any way financially. 

The decision was part of the Backlog Initiative, where the Landmark Preservation Commission prioritizes properties that were not acted on in decades.
