A 9-year-old boy was struck by a car after it collided into another vehicle Friday in Marine Park, police say.
It happened at the intersection of Avenue P and Ryder Street around 8:30 a.m. Police say the boy and his mother were walking on Ryder Street to a bus when a black sedan jumped the curb and struck the child. Investigators say the black sedan hit the boy after it collided with a white van traveling eastbound on Avenue P.
The boy was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where he remains in critical but stable condition. A friend of the boy's mother tells News 12 that he suffered a fractured skull.
"What I heard was the bang and at first I didn't really pay attention to it until I heard the kids screaming so when I came out on the porch I saw the lady across the street holding her son rocking back-and-forth," said witness Nichelle Greaves.
Both drivers stayed at the scene. At this time, no arrests have been made.
Community members have been petitioning for all-way stop signs at the intersection.
Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein tells News 12 that officials at the Department of Transportation looked at a stop sign request for the area within the past six months, but the request was denied. She says she wasn't given a reason why and is requesting a reconsideration.
The DOT told News 12 in a statement that "We denied the signal study at this location because it did not meet the nationally recognized traffic engineering safety standards for traffic controls that we follow. We are currently looking into additional safety measures in the area."
Neighbors are hoping a better solution will be made soon.
