Accused cop killer's second trial goes to jury
The fate of accused cop killer Lee Woods is now in the hands of a jury.
Woods is being tried for the second time in the slaying of police Detective Russel Timoshenko. His first trial was declared a mistrial after a juror got sick and Woods refused to allow an alternate to take over.
Prosecutors told jurors in closing arguments Thursday that Woods was part of a team of three men who acted in concert to kill two police officers to avoid arrest for driving a stolen vehicle with illegal weapons inside.
Woods is the third man accused in the killing of Timoshenko and the attempted killing of Detective Herman Yan during a 2007 traffic stop. Dexter Bostic was found guilty on all charges, including aggravated murder, aggravated attempted murder and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Robert Ellis was acquitted of murder and attempted murder, but found guilty of criminal possession of a weapon.
The shooting broke out after the men were stopped by Timoshenko and Han on July 9, 2007 in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. Woods has maintained that he was only driving the vehicle and took no part in the shooting. His attorney has argued that there is no evidence to the contrary.
