Art lovers tour Brooklyn's public artwork
Art is everywhere in Brooklyn, from the Coney Island boardwalk to the Greenpoint Waterfront, and the city wants to make sure New Yorkers take advantage of it.
Dozens of people involved in the arts, some of them with large Instagram followings, boarded a school bus Friday to take a tour of the borough's artwork.
"Growing up in Queens, I've seen the public art there, but I haven't really explored much in Brooklyn," said Shama Rahman. "So it's really exciting to do that."
One stop included a sculpture at the Prospect Park Zoo.
"A lot of the projects that people may see every day, they may not even realize is artwork," said Kendal Henry, of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs' Percent for Art Program. "We sort of wanted to introduce that idea again, that art can be interactive. It can be interesting. It can be everywhere."
At the Brooklyn Public Library, participant Steve Harmon was mesmerized by the library's grand doors, which he said he passes often.
"I've never photographed it," said Harmon, who took photos during the tour. "I think I'm going to be able to show people what Brooklyn has to offer in the way of art."
Participants then tagged their photos with #NYCultureOnWheels and posted the images on social media.
The Department of Cultural Affairs said the event was its first public-art tour, but it hopes to hold many more.
