Authorities make arrest in deadly hit-and-run crash in Garfield
Authorities in Bergen County have arrested the driver allegedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash.
Franklin Lakes resident Paul Frischer, 59, was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and endangering an injured victim.
Officials say that on Sept. 17 Frischer struck 42-year-old Giovanni Rivera as Rivera was walking along MacArthur Avenue in Garfield. The crash happened just after 7 p.m.
Rivera was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment, but died early Wednesday morning.
Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that Rivera was disabled and living in a group home nearby.
Others tell News 12 that while MacArthur Avenue is a residential street, they have witnessed many people speeding along the roadway.
“We just sit on our porch. I have three kids. I won’t even let them near the sidewalk because of the speed,” says Lacey Pena.
Police have not said if speeding was a factor in the crash.
Authorities say that Frischer was driving a 1999 Chevy Suburban at the time of the crash. Frischer is being held at the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance Thursday morning.
