New York City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. defeated Councilman Tony Avella Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for mayor.
Primary elections were also held for the city's public advocate and comptroller, as well as for several City Council seats in Brooklyn.
In City Council District 35, incumbent Leticia James is looking to hold off a challenge from Delia Hunley-Adossa in one the borough's most heated races.
Polls will be open across New York City until 9 p.m.
