Brooklyn academy prepares for disaster with ever-growing management plan
A day after the nation remembered those lost in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, a Windsor Terrace school is diving deep in their approach to crises.
Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy has an 18-page crisis management plan in place, discussing what to do in an active shooter situation, and more. Officials say over the years the plan has continued to expand.
The academy is among 81 under the Diocese of Brooklyn educational system. Over the past few years, educators say they have put more emphasis on how to respond to mass shootings, forming an eight-person crisis committee to create a response to hypothetical situations.
"It's just heartbreaking that this is the kind of world that our children are growing up in, that these things are happening and that it could happen anywhere," says Resurrection Ascension Catholic Academy Principal Joann Heppt.
Those on the committee say their plan is a result of teamwork. They say they have consulted local law enforcement, fire departments and even the FBI.
The city's Department of Education says it is committed to safety and adds, "There are robust systems in place that ensure the safety and preparedness of our school communities, including staff training on the DOE's general response protocol and mandatory lockdown evacuation drills with students."
