Brooklyn court officer pleads guilty to public lewdness
A court officer pleaded guilty Wednesday after a woman said he forced her to perform a sex act on him in the stairwell of a Brooklyn courthouse.
Timothy Nolan pleaded guilty to public lewdness. As a result of the plea, he had to resign as a sergeant and as a court officer, in addition to losing his pension.
Nolan was initially charged with official misconduct, coercion and exposure of a person.
The victim in the case, Erica McRae, was inside court Wednesday for the plea. Her lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, says the incident happened last October in a courthouse on Schermerhorn Street.
McRae told her lawyer and police that she was at a bail hearing for her boyfriend when the former court officer said he would "make this go away" if she performed oral sex on him. Rubenstein says Nolan abused his power, and his client felt like she had no choice.
Nolan does not have to serve prison time as part of his plea. Rubenstein says they will now move forward with a civil lawsuit, with a jury deciding what damages to which McRae is entitled.
