Many Brooklyn pet owners are displeased with the recent removal of the self-service Dog Parker pet houses located outside of 45 locations across Brooklyn.
The pet houses allow dog owners to leave their pets outside of local businesses in safe, climate-controlled houses for small periods of time. The houses, however, were removed Thursday at the request of the Department of Transportation.
City Councilman Rafael Espinal, Dog Parker owners and people in the community have since spoken out against the DOT’s order to remove the units. They say the pet structures are an important addition to the daily lives of dog owners.
Advocates for the units say they haven’t received an explanation from the DOT as to why the units were removed.
“We won't be moving our headquarters for now,” said one of the founders of Dog Parker. “We're going to stick tight here with a pretty high expectation that we'll be able to be back soon.”
The founders of Dog Parker say they've been approached by dozens of city mayors across the country and are hoping to launch in new markets soon.
A representative from the DOT did not outwardly state why the kennels were removed, but did mention talks with Dog Parker regarding structures that create obstructions on sidewalks.
