Millions of people remain without power and in dire need of supplies after Hurricane Maria tore through the Caribbean.
Members of the organization UPROSE are hoping to bring some help with a ship that is headed down the coast today.
UPROSE's trip is underway as its heads down to Norfolk, Virginia with plans to hopefully end up in Puerto Rico.
The crew of the Arctic Sunrise ship pulled out of Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday.
The efforts are part of a new national campaign called Our Power Puerto Rico with plans to bring resources to the island for a recovery that they say would help protect Puerto Rico from the kind of destruction they dealt with from Hurricane Maria.
Right now there are some logistics that still need to be worked out before they can actually go to Puerto Rico, so first they'll be making stops in Virginia, North Carolina and Miami where they'll educate the public about the impacts of plastics and oil drilling on the coast.
Their final and ultimate goal, of course, is to end up in Puerto Rico to help rebuild.
